Aakash 2 India’s cheapest android tablet pc is basically developed for school’s and college students in India for an affordable price of $35 (about Rs 1,900 approx) which will be subsidized and sold for $20 (appx Rs 1,130) for the students by the Indian Government.
Aakash 2 is an upgraded version of the last year’s Aakash tablet and it was released on 11 November 2012. Indian Government in collaboration with DataWind a British company along with the IIT Bombay & CDAC as the IT partners has developed this 7 inch tablet which is far better than its predecessor Aakash which was not released in the market for not meeting some of the technical standards. Aakash 2 is designed, developed and assembled in India hence making it an Indian product.

The main purpose to develop such tablet is to link the schools, colleges and universities in an e-learning program. It is a tool to eradicate the illiteracy in the country. The device is also showcased in the UN last week.
One can use this portable device for reading the ebooks, browse the internet, sending emails, solving the assignments, online tutorials, and even play simple games and access Google Play store. The tablet doesn’t have features which are redundant for the students like Bluetooth, GPS, HDMI, NFC, too many sensors or a high resolution display or camera. Remember that the tablet is developed only for the education section with a very cheap and budget price hence expecting a high end features in this would be incorrect.

The low cost Aakash II tablet is also known as UbiSlate 7Ci, it has a 7inch capacitive touchscreen with 800 x 480 resolution. The tablet is powered by an impressive 1GHz Cortex A8 single core processor with 512MB of RAM and 2GB internal memory. Os used is the stock Android 4.0.4 ICS version. With the above system spec one can expect a good performance with normal usage. The device has a 2100mAH battery which lasts for 3 to 4 hrs on normal usage. Commercial version of Aakash 2 is available at Rs 4,499. The specifications are quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, that houses a Snapdragon S4.

Panasonic, the Japanese manufacturers revealed there two latest robust tablets called Panasonic Toughpad JT-B1 Android tablet and Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 Windows tablet at CES 2013. Both the tablets are mainly designed to work in tough and harsh environment.

Panasonic Toughpad JT-B1 Android 4.0 tablet sports a 17.7-cm (7-inch) display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. The processing power for this device comes from 1.5 Ghz dual core processor. The device has 1 GB RAM and also has an on board storage of 16 GB, which is expandable through a microSD card. It is having a rear camera of 13 MP and a front facing camera of 1.3 MP. Wireless options consists of Wi-Fi, 3G, optional 4G LTE and Bluetooth. The device is supported with one micro-USB and comes with a battery life of 8 hours. Panasonic has priced Toughpad JT-B1 tablet at $1,299 and will be shortly available from February.

Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 Windows 8 tablet features a waterproof 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. It is powered by a an Intel Core i5 processor (1.9GHz to 2.9GHz) . Memory options include 4-8 GB RAM on board storage of 128 GB to 256 GB, with optional micro-SD. It has USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Ethernet and HDMI ports. The connectivity and battery life of this device is same as JT-B1. The price tag for the Windows 8 Pro tablet is yet to be announced by the company. It is likely to be available from the end of February hopefully in India too at the same time.

Lava’s first Android v4.2 tablet to be priced under Rs 10k, coming to stores by first week of May

Lava Mobiles is currently working on the successor of its highly popular Xtron Tablet. The new tablet will be the first tablet from a local brand to feature the Android v4.2 Jelly Bean.

The tablet will be officially announced next week and is expected to be named under the Lava’s E Tab Xtron series. The speculated price tag for this tablet is below Rs 10,000 and will most probably be available for purchase starting from the first week of May in India.

In the specs sheet the Lava’s upcoming tablet will come with a 1.5-GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable), a 2-mega pixel rear shooter on the back, VGA quality front facing camera, Wi-Fi only, HDMI and 3,700 mAh battery fitted inside.
Similar to E Tab Xtron the new tablet may have a 7 inch display and mayn’t come with the voice calling facility. More news in coming days.

5 features to look for in a budget tablet – 2013

Today Tablet PC’s have become very popular among students, businessmen, professionals and technology lovers. They are used for browsing, gaming, watching videos/streaming contents apart from just video chatting.
India alone has more than 3 million tablet users currently and the number is busy increasing. With such popularity these days variety of budget oriented tablets ranging between Rs 7k to Rs 10k are coming up in the market from both big and local brands.
So selecting a right tablet with promising technical specs from the available ones without getting trapped to their attractive price tag is quiet tough. In this article we will be looking at the most probable features which should be considered before buying one.

Below are the list of best features to be looked in a 2013 budget tablet before buying:
1) System – Dual Core + GPU + Memory
In the budget section the consumer cannot expect a very high end specs and performance from the device. However the technology today is so much advanced that the buyer can expect an enough powerful machine with decent performance in the affordable devices.
Looking at today’s technology the tablet’s system on chip (SoC) must incorporate atleast a dual core processor (would be good if its Cortex A9/A15 CPU) clocked between 1 to 1.5 Ghz frequency alongwith and a powerful GPU (most probably Adreno or Mali 400 or PowerVR SGX series).
The GPU performance is gaining lot of importance from a user’s perspective because applications and high graphics games simply require a significantly faster graphics core to provide an optimum experience without any lags.
In the memory front, larger the RAM better is its multi functionality. 512MB or 1GB RAM would be an ideal choice with a minimum of 4 to 8GB internal memory along with a micro SD card slot.

2) Operating System
Here it is important to make a decision which Os is better for you. Currently there are four choices in this category – Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows where Android seems to have more number of choices then any other platform.
Word of advice would be go for the brand which has reputation of providing software upgrades. One of my friend had a tablet with a bug in Wifi connection. The tablet used to get disconnected from the internet very frequently. To his fate the tablet was from a start-up brand. Till now he hasn’t got any bugfixes for it and he cannot do anything about it but just live with it.
So the main advantage of software updates is not only minor enhancements but also the much needed bug fixes.

3) Display
Tablets have their screen size ranging from 7-inch to 10-inch diagonally. Most of the tablet in the economical range come with the screen size between 7 to 8-inch which sounds good for portability.
Most important feature to look for in the display segment is whether the tablet’s screen is integrated with IPS technology or not. If its not then the user mayn’t get a wider viewing angle.

4) Connectivity
The connectivity option for a tablet under 10K is sparse when compared with high end and more expensive tablet. Choose a tab which include many connectivity options like – Wi-Fi or 3G for video chatting.
– Tablet with a sim slot for those who use their tab as smartphones. This feature is an added advantage for the tablets portability. With the internet package activated on the SIM Card one can browse or watch videos online far from home.
Other features should also include HDMI Port for sharing the pictures, videos on the TV. USB port can be used for connecting keyboard, printer, pen drives, 3G Dongles etc

5) Battery
Battery life of a tablet depends on your usage. But look for a tab which must atleast offer 5-6 hours of continuous usage on a single charge.
