What is an AMOLED?

AMOLED – Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode are the next generation displays. Most Samsung devices like latest Samsung Galaxy Tab use this type of panel:

    • Overview:

Couple of years ago there were so many LCD mobile phones produced by cellphone manufacturers like Nokia 5300, N73, N76, Sony Ericsson‘s W580, Apple iPhone 4 etc. But now most of the cell phone manufacturers are using AMOLED in their devices because of some advantages over the LCD/TFT display types. How this amazing color of the AMOLED technology is used to make graphics pop in games, movies, and general use case scenarios. This type of OLED screen is simply amazing for games due to the amazing color gamut as well as the fast response times making games smooth. We recommend you try some interesting casino games with this type of panel, we also recommend you give this casino bonus guide at RealMoneyUS a quick read. This will teach you how to utilize bonuses and a few other tricks that might come in handy when playing at an online casino. Now let’s enjoy a full comparison between these panels.

    • Description:

My phone factor blog about Light Emitting Diode (LED) which creates light when an electricity is applied to it. In the similar way even the OLED also does along with some extra ordinary features. OLED is made up of organic or carbon based materials. This material is composed of thin multi-layered films like Hole Transporting Layer (HTL), Emission Layer (EML) & Electron Transporting Layer (ETL). So by applying the appropriate voltage to the two terminals i.e, Cathode (Negative) & Anode (positive) the electrons and holes combine together inside the EML to form excitation after which the Electroluminescence occur hence emitting the light.

There are several kinds of OLED’s like

– Passive Matrix OLED (PMOLED) used as the display in the Mp3 players
– Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) used as the display in the smartphones
– Transparent OLED used as heads up display in automobiles, fighter planes. It means the driver/pilot can see the view and the display at a time on the glass
– Top-Emitting OLED can be used in the smart cards
– White OLED used as fluorescent lamps in homes, buildings.

AMOLED consists of the OLED pixels that are integrated on the Thin Film Transistor (TFT). Pixel is a smallest unit of an image. In AMOLED this pixel is switched on by the TFT when there is a white image and it is switched off when there is a black image. AMOLED doesn’t require a backlight for display as compared to the LCD. Based on the AMOLED technology Google has come up with a new search engine specially designed for the low power consumption called as Black Google Mobile. Using this search engine saves your battery. You can see the difference in the display’s quality by watching any video online, movie, or TV show. Better yet, why not try playing a game? Choose your favorite, or if you are a gambling game lover, visit the casino site vision-games.com and select one from their extensive list of games. This is a sure way to test the capabilities and limits of the new AMOLED display.

    • Advantages of AMOLED:

1. Fast Response Time. It means a full motion graphics can be displayed. For ex, a moving vehicle can be displayed neatly without any blur.
2. Wide Viewing Angle. It means a person can view the screen clearly at an angle of 60 degree.
3. AMOLED’s power consumption is based on the background image, content & application. For a black background the power consumption is very less and for a white its more than the TFT/LCD screen. Technically the LED’s in the display are switched off in the black background hence consuming less power and switched on in the white background leading to more power consumption from the battery. So use black background to minimize the power consumption.
4. Ultra thin and Light weighted.
5. Wide operating temperature range (-40degree to 80degree) compared to the TFT/LCD (-20degree to 70degree).

6. High Contrast Ratio makes the image feel Brighter.

    • Disadvantages of AMOLED:

1. Reflective in the day light.
2. Costlier then the traditional TFT/LCD.
3. Lifespan less compared to the LCD, maybe couple of years. Some pixels may stop working due to the internal heat dissipation (burn-in) in the screen hence displaying an unclear images. Anyways a lifespan requirement is probably less needed in case of a mobile handsets.
4. Image Sticking problem. For Ex, consider a chess board is displayed on the screen for some time and immediately if the screen is switched to a white background then the Black images of the chess board can be seen as gray in color in the white background screen. This kind of affect is usually called as “Ghosting” affect.

    • AMOLED’s Applications:

AMOLED display are manufactured by the companies like – Samsung Mobile Display, LG display, Kodak etc for Smartphones, TV, Digital Cameras, Mp3 Players and Tablets. Currently the AMOLED is used in the Android smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S II, Nexus S, HTC, Nokia.

There is no doubt that Smartphones are small computers. If desktop computers can get affected with the Viruses then why not Smartphones. Till today there are many Mobile Virus reported in countries like China, Russia, Australia, US.

My Phone Factor Blog recommends tips about how does a Mobile Virus affect the smartphone? From where does these creepy software crawlers penetrate into our devices? How much damage does a malware do once affected? Is there any fix to prevent from such threats?
These are the questions for which the smartphone user has to know the answers before using the device. Before going further let us look at the list of some smartphone virus/malwares/spywares that are hiding in the apps/sms/mms/documents and eagerly waiting for just one click from the user. Want more smartphone tech news like this ? Stick around.

Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android:
Trojan MMarketPay.A virus was discovered last year in China by TrustGo Mobile Security company. This virus is developed for Android powered devices.
The virus comes repacked with apps like com.mediawoz.goweather, com.mediawoz.gotq. Once the app is installed the virus comes to life and starts placing the orders and downloads paid apps, video contents on the China’s Mobile Market (Android app store hosted by China Mobile) automatically on behalf of the user and the user never comes to know about it until he sees the phone bill.
The virus can be found in the third party Chinese android market (not google playstore), it has affected more than 100,000 devices in China last year.

Geinimi Trojan:
This Trojan was also found in third party Chinese Android Market app store. The virus is attached with the games like Monkey Jump 2, Sex Positions, President vs. Aliens, City Defense and Baseball Superstars 2010 by the hackers. One the games are installed the virus also gets installed. After this the bugger starts to read and collect SMS messages, send and delete selected SMS messages, pull all contact information and send it to a remote server (number, name, the time they were last contacted), send cell phone information to the remote server (SIM Number, IMEI Number, Phone number, Phone location), place a phone call, silently download files and launch a web browser with a specific URL.
The Virus was first seen in 2010, now most of the antivirus vendors (Like Lookout) have solution to tackle this kind of viruses.

Other malware list includes worms like DroidKungFu, Ikee Worm, SMS Android Trojan.

How to Prevent from these threats:
– Basic tip for android smartphones, go to the application options via Settings and uncheck the “Unknown Sources”. This will prevent unwanted downloads from the third party app stores.
– Install a mobile security app/anti-virus software for your phone that scans every app you download.
– Always download the apps from trusted sources, such as reputable application markets like Google PlayStore, Amazon.
– Before downloading any app try to look at the developer name, reviews, and star ratings
– Always check the permissions an app requests. Use common sense to ensure that the permissions an app requests match the features the app provides.
– Be aware that unusual behavior on your phone could be a sign that your phone is infected. Unusual behaviors include: unknown applications being installed without your knowledge, SMS messages being automatically sent to unknown recipients, or phone calls automatically being placed without you initiating them.
– Keep a close watch on your cell phone bills.

Sensors used in Smartphone

What is a Sensor?
Sensors are devices which measure the physical energy (like temperature) and converts it into a signal (typically analog). Later this signal can be read or observed from an instrument or an electronic device (like a microcontroller) connected to the sensor. There are more than hundreds of types of sensors available in market today.
Most Android powered phones, Windows Phones, iPhone, all models of Samsung Galaxy Tab, Blackberry Os and other Os based smartphones have built-in sensors that measure the orientation, motion, light and other environmental conditions. These sensors are built to measure and provide a high precision & accurate data to the reader. For example, consider the airbag sensor placed in a car. Its main function is to trigger the airbag immediately after a collision. Just imagine what happens if this sensor doesn’t work properly or fail to provide accurate data. Result will be disastrous. So most of the critical sensors measure their inputs with a very high precision. There is no doubt in saying that sensors make our life simple and easy. That is the reason they are used widely in today’s world like in space shuttles, satellites, robots, automotive, planes, office, lift, smartphones and the list goes on…In this article we will be looking at the sensors used in a smartphone.

Sensors in Smartphone:
Today mobile devices are named as smartphones because they are not just used for handling the calls but for many other things like video recording, GPS navigation, Mp3, Wifi and in coming days it will also be used for mobile payment using NFC technology just like a credit card. With such smartness in it it is obvious that it will be consuming more power. Hence most of the sensors in a smartphone play an important role in reducing the power consumption. Smartphones have both hardware-based sensors and software-based sensors. The hardware-based sensors are physically present in the device and directly measure the environmental properties where as the software-based sensors are virtual sensors (not physical) which take their inputs from one or more hardware sensors for calculation. Go here if u want to read more android smartphones reviews.

List of sensors used in a smartphone are presented below:

  • Accelerometer

Accelerometers are hardware sensors. They are the simple MEMS (Microelectromechanical System) devices which are used to measure position, motion, tilt, shock, vibration, and acceleration (the rate of change of velocity – m/s2). They are available with one, two, or three axes. A 3-axis accelerometer senses the orientation of the phone and changes the screen, images, web browser, music player accordingly, allowing the user to easily switch between portrait and landscape mode.

  • Proximity Sensor

Proximity Sensor is a hardware-based sensor. It measures the proximity/position of an object in cm relative to the screen of a device. This sensor determines the position of the phone w.r.t the object. For eg: it measures the distance between the phone and face when the phone is brought near to face during a call. With this measurement the application can deactivate the display for saving the power and prevent any unintentional inputs caused from touching face/ear to the screen.

  • Ambient Light Sensor

An ambient light sensor is a hardware-based sensor which is typically used for adjusting the display brightness hence saving the battery power. These sensors are made up of photocells which detect the presence of light in the environment. For eg: if a phone is used in a dark room where the presence of light is minimal, the phone works at its brightest since the ambient light sensor doesn’t detect the light hence no saving of the power. But it is the reverse case if a phone is used outdoor. Most of the smartphone manufacturers use this sensor in their devices by default.

  • Compass

The Compass or magnetometer is a hardware-based sensor which can be used to determine the angle by which the device is rotated relative to the Earth’s magnetic north pole. The magnetic compass contains a magnet that interacts with the earth’s magnetic field and aligns itself to point to the magnetic poles. Simple compasses of this type show directions in a frame of reference in which the directions of the magnetic poles are due north and south. These directions are called magnetic north and magnetic south. It can be used as a navigational instrument. Nokia Lumia 610 has this sensor built-in.

  • Gyroscope

The Gyroscope sensor is used to determine the rotational, spinning, turning velocity of the device in each axis. In other words it measures the angular rate of how quickly the object turns. World’s first Intel inside smartphone – Lava Xolo X900 has this sensor built-in.

List of Free Calling Softwares

Below, on My phone factor blog is the list of free voice/video calling software applications for all major operating system platforms which can be used with Mobile Phones as well as desktop pc. Using these softwares services you can call the other party with no charges at all. Because these softwares use the VOIP technology (Voice Over Internet Protocol). Voip is a method of transmission of voice signals, multimedia signals over the internet. My Phone factor blog offers you the latest Smartphone tech news. With voip you can make call using internet connection/wifi instead of your service provider’s network all over the world. But there are some conditions –
1. Both the parties should have an internet (For Mobile Phones preferably 3G network/WiFi connection is required).
2. Both the parties should have this software installed.
3. Call can be placed and received only if this software is running.

This software could be run on all of the models of Samsung Galaxy Tab.

    • Skype:

Most popular software and freely downloadable app on the net. This software supports all major operating systems like Windows, Apple’s iOS & Mac, Android and Symbian. Both the parties should have an account on skype to access the service. With Skype you chat using their instant messaging and you can call from skype to skype on –
1. Mobile to Mobile
2. Mobile to PC
3. PC to PC
Mobile to Landline or PC to Landline requires a premium account.

    • Tango:

Tango application is also free calling service. It uses the same address book as that of the device, synchronizes with it and shows a tango tag against the contact if they are registered to tango hence with just a click you can place a free call to the tango user. This synchronizing feature is not available in the Skype. It works with iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Windows PC. It can be downloaded freely from app store or android market place and registering on tango is quiet simple and easy.

    • Viber:

Viber application also allows free calling and sending messages. It’s a lot simpler than Skype but it you can’t make video calls from it and there is no desktop client for talking to those on a computer but it does have some advantages, such as the lack of need to create an account. Viber just uses your mobile number to make the calls (although the actual call is made over the Internet) and similar to tango viber also uses your existing phonebook numbers instead of having to create and add new contacts, as on Skype. If you just want to talk to someone using an Android or an iPhone (a version for BlackBerry phones is in works), Viber is a lot easier and simpler choice.

How do Cell Phones get charged using Wireless Charging Technology?

    • Overview:

This article explains about the Wireless Charging Technology which most of the cell phone manufacturers are using to build there smartphones more smartly than ever. Considering the rumors Samsung Galaxy S3 will be coming up with this feature, HTC Rezound already has this feature. Actually any gadget can have this feature, the only condition is that there should be a power transfer unit which must be connected to the power source and the power capture unit which will be embedded in the gadget to charge it.

Wireless Charging is not a new concept, Nicola Tesla invented the wireless power transmission in the late 1800s. In the early 1900s he remotely powered all the lights in the ground at his Colorado Springs experiment station. Unfortunately his invention was not well accepted. Anyways in today’s world his invention is recalled and getting implemented.

    • What is Wireless Charging Technology?

Most of us have already experienced the wireless technology. The best example of this technology would be the radio or the mobile phone. Like the radio station transmits the songs in the form of radio waves and the receiver decodes it before we listen to the song. In other words i can say that the power is transmitted from one end without wires in the form of radio waves using electromagnetic radiation and the other end receives this signal, decodes it and uses it.
So why cant we use this technology for charging the cellphone or an ipod?
Answer is simple – During transmission the radiation spreads in all the direction wasting the majority of the power in the free space.
So what would be the best solution for charging the gadgets wirelessly? Magnetic Coupled Resonator would be the solution. It means there will be two magnetic coils with closely matching resonant frequency (fine tuned) which can couple (connect) strongly in a magnetic field.

    • How does it work?

There are many methods of wireless power transmission, this content covers the non-radiativemethod which is the safe and most efficient method of wireless power transmission. WiTricity Technology has developed this technology.

The wireless charging system includes two units – Power transfer unit and Power reception unit, both are made up of copper coils. The transfer unit is connected to the power source and it produces a non-radiative magnetic field around its space oscillating in MHz frequency. It means this field will be not widely spread across in space unlike the electromagnetic radiation. So only the space around this transfer unit is filled with the resonant magnetic field.
When the receiving unit (which is also a coil) is brought nearby this non-radiative magnetic field then it starts resonating. This receiver is specifically designed to resonate in this magnetic field. The electric current running in the transfer unit coil induces another current in the receiving coil hence transferring the power. This current generated in the receiving coil can be used to power the device. Using this method, over several kilowatts of power can be transferred safely and efficiently over significantly larger distances irrespective of the alignment.
Devices kept from some centimeters to several meters far can couple together and transfer the power but this also depends on some conditions like amount of power to be transferred, capturing device size etc. So the power transfer efficiency mainly depends on the distance between the transfer unit and the receive unit.

    • Advantages:

– Hands-free.
– No plugs or charging cords needed.
– No need to plug in or unplug.
– Non-Radiative mode of energy transfer is a Safe Technology.
– Less cables, wires, cords

    • Disadvantages:

– Presence of metal walls between the units can act as barrier and prevent the power transmission.
– Distance of power transmission is less.
– Some amount of energy is lost during power transmission.
